Hi guys! It’s Sandi. And in this episode of my Nerd Nail Series, I’ll be showing you how to create a fun nail art design inspired by the brand new Wii U game, Splatoon! I loooove this game so much because it’s SO much fun.
It’s a third person shooter where you shoot colorful ink at opponents and surfaces. You can also transform into a squid to swim quickly through your own ink color. So, let’s begin this nail design with a base coat to protect our natural nails.
This will also help to adhere your polishes to your nail bed. Next paint all of your nails using two coats of a dark grey polish. I really like this one from The Body Shop as it’s the perfect, creamy shade of a solid dark grey.
Next use a dotting tool and orange polish to create the shape of the squid. I like to begin with 3 dots in a triangular shape for the squid’s head. This helps with size and placement. Then use the dotting tool in a stippling motion to connect the dots to form a triangle.
Now, add in a rectangle to the bottom of the triangle. And yes, this is going to be a squid and not a mushroom from the first NES Mario game… even tho it’s starting to look like one. Now, fill in the shapes with the orange polish.
Using the same dotting tool, add in a few brown dots over the orange rectangle. Try to vary the sizes of the dots by not pressing the dotting tool down fully to the nail. Use a big dotting tool to add two big white dots for the squid’s eyes.
Place these directly above the rectangle. Ta-da! Now it’s time for some outlining. Use a black striper to outline everything! Quick tip: if your striper becomes goopy while doing this, just place it back in the bottle for a few minutes and then start again.
Once you get down to the rectangle, begin to draw lines that will turn it into the squid’s tentacles, like so. If you don’t have a striper brush, you can always use a tiny paintbrush from a local craft store.
That works fine too! Finally, add in the black pupils to finish the squid! For the rest of the nails, we’re going to be doing ink splatter. This is fairly easy and really fun— It’s time to get creative! Just choose a few neon colors from your collection and use a dotting tool to create splatter shapes over your nails.
You can also add tiny dots as well. Overlapping the ink splatters looks really nice too! Mix up the placement of the ink colors on each of your nails to create more interest in the design. For the last step, finish off with a fast drying top coat to seal in your design and add a glossy shine.
And now your fresh new nail art design is all done! If you have a request for the next nerd-themed design, let me know down in the comments. And as always, if you decide to give this Splatoon nail art design a try, then please share it with me on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #cutepolish or on the new CutePolish App! Take care and I’ll seeya next time!
